Long-time CHC President and CEO Offers Insight in Nonprofit Evolution and Best Practices

CHC: Creating Healthier Communities, a national nonprofit that removes the barriers to good health and equity, recently announced Jean C. Accius, PhD as its new president and CEO in advance of the retirement of Thomas Bognanno, who has led the organization for more than 17 years. Accius’ start date was Monday, February 27. To ensure a smooth transition and demonstrate his full support for the new CEO, current CEO Bognanno will remain with CHC through March 31.

Bognanno is retiring following a remarkable 40-year career in nonprofit leadership and management. Prior to his current role, which he has held since 2006, Bognanno had a distinguished 20-year career with the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Prior to his years with ADA, he spent six years with the American Cancer Society. As a leader at CHC, he has transformed our work, expanded funding channels and setting the organization on a path of continued growth and increased community impact.

In preparation for his upcoming retirement, Bognanno offers insights into the great questions faced by many nonprofits — including continuing to evolve based on societal changes and creating a positive work environment.
