CHC Unites Birthworkers and Community Leaders in Atlanta for First Black Birthing Initiative Grantee Convening

CHC: Creating Healthier Communities held its first ever Black Birthing Initiative (BBI) Convening in Atlanta on February 5-7, 2024. Facilitated by CHC and Enlightened Solutions, the convening provided grantees with a space to share BBI progress and preliminary outcomes. Grantees also participated in trainings and sharing sessions, such as holistic pregnancy and postpartum care, to further professional development and collaborative efforts. Through CHC and with founding supporter Elevance Health Foundation, the event was built on the foundation of work that grantees have conducted through the multi-year BBI to improve outcomes and reduce preterm birth rates for Black women and birthing people.

Dr. Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha, an Associate Professor within the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University and an expert on community-driven participatory research and health disparities, served as the keynote speaker. Attendees included the BBI collaboratives from Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as representation from the community engagement process in Indianapolis and maternal health and birthing experts.

The convening provided an opportunity for grantee partners to forge meaningful connections and share experiences. Attendees left with an expanded network, knowledge and resources to continue their ongoing efforts in addressing Black maternal health issues within their communities.

CHC will share footage from the convening in the near future. We are honored to pioneer and support programs that promote health equity for Black women and birthing people and families.
