Interview tactics:
Navigating interviews in the social impact space involves highlighting your passion for making a difference while demonstrating your relevant skills and experiences. Here are some tips to help you prepare for and excel in interviews within this impactful sector.
- Demonstrate how your skills (work or volunteer) are directly transferable to social impact jobs. Many skills such as communications and community relations, relationship building, user experience, project management, investing and data science easily translate. Getting your bearings with artificial intelligence (AI) may help open doors. Social impact jobs are not unicorns, rainbows, and check presentations. They are complex jobs often supporting everything from reputation management to employee engagement to aligning the organization’s assets to do social good.
- Show how you are committed to doing good for the community—and for the business. Craft an elevator pitch highlighting your key skills but differentiate yourself by showing you are committed not just to social impact but also to shared value or the triple bottom line, ensuring this work brings value to the business. Similar with DEI, learn how to make the business case.
- Consider hiring a career coach (or friend) to help you better showcase your personal brand and position your resume.
