About This Session

On June 24, 2026, CHC: Creating Healthier Communities hosted Caregiving Without Collapse: Strengthening Support Systems for Families, part of the AARP-sponsored CHC University series. Featuring a moderator and panel of experts spanning caregiving coaching, mental health, senior living, and aging policy, the webinar offered a candid, data-driven conversation on the growing caregiving crisis in America. With 63 million Americans providing unpaid care annually, a workforce valued at over $1 trillion, and nearly three in four caregivers beginning the role without warning or preparation, the discussion explored the real human cost behind these numbers: burnout, compassion fatigue, financial strain, and the slow, often invisible collapse of caregivers themselves.

Panelists shared personal stories alongside professional expertise, examining who is most at risk, including working caregivers, those caring for loved ones with dementia or complex conditions, and the often-overlooked population of male caregivers, and what meaningful support actually looks like. The conversation covered practical strategies for building resilience, reframing self-care as a necessity rather than a luxury, and changing the cultural narrative around caregiver self-sacrifice. From peer support models and coaching to integrating caregiver well-being directly into healthcare treatment plans, the session offered both validation and actionable guidance for caregivers, nonprofit professionals, and employers alike. Takeaways from Our Panel

“Caregiving might be the most important and loneliest job in the history of the universe โ€” and this isn’t the absence of others, it’s the absence of ourselves.”

“Caregivers are not heroes or superheroes. We are people. And we need to stop the culture that rewards self-sacrifice and makes people feel guilty for making the right decisions.”

“We have to offer ourselves grace, forgiveness, and permission to put our own oxygen mask on first. And that doesn’t mean we don’t love those that we are caring for.”

“Caregiving is not a solo act.”
